Be kind, for everyone is fighting a hard battle.

So my school has a page called, Spotted At Laurier, where people can post their missed connections, things they’ve spotted, or anything in general at Laurier. Today somebody posted this:

Spotted: My brother is a first year student at Laurier University staying on residence. Its come to my attention that fellow students on residence have been bullying him. They call him inappropriate names, stole his food, and spilled pop all over his bed. This student has a concerned brother and caring parents who are worried about him. A university education should be a bully free zone. This isn’t high school anymore.

First of all, regardless of the fact that he’s in elementary, high school, or university – bullying shouldn’t be a thing, anywhere. Bullying stinks. Bullying sucks. Bullying ruins lives.

According to The Government of Canada, at least 1 in 3 adolescents has reported incidents of bullying. 47% of parents in Canada have reported having a child a victim of bullying. That’s almost half. Bullying leads to many mental issues such as depression and even suicide.

It’s sad to see that highly educated students like ourselves are still bullying in school, but what’s even sadder to see is that bullying is still seen as a “a way of life” or “part of the real world.” “Kids will be kids.” It absolutely boggles my mind that people still think bullying is acceptable. Maybe if people realized how hurtful bullying really is they’d realize that bullying is unnecessary. We live in a society where being different is valued, and we should accept everyone for who they are. If that’s true, why would you bully someone? Although posting on a status may not be the best solution to the problem, it definitely helps people be more aware that bullying still exists, even though it shouldn’t.

For the kid whose brother is getting bullied – if you see this – I’m sorry to hear that. If he needs to talk to somebody, let him know he can message me anytime.

So the next time you want to bully somebody, watch this video and maybe you’ll think twice about ruining someone’s life.

If you see somebody getting bullied, do something. Even the smallest action can change somebody’s life.

“All it takes is for one person to stand up.” – Bully, 2012.
